Initially published in magazines such as Cosmopolitan, The American Magazine and Redbook, these thrilling tales were among the most popular stories of early-twentieth century America. They follow Blackie, a safecracker and jewel thief who is guided by a strong moral code. Though he is the criminal, he never targets honorable, upstanding people, ensuring that his victims are the real villains. Nevertheless, Blackie gets into (and out of) some pretty tight spots, and with the aid of his wife and getaway driver, he escapes prison, saves a friend from the gallows, and pulls of incredible heists.
Since the initial publication of these tales, the Boston Blackie character has been subject to countless adaptations and interpretations. From 1918 to 1927, numerous silent films were produced featuring Blackie. In 1941, Columbia Pictures revived the character for fourteen more pictures starring Chester Morris, with production continuing throughout the decade. Over 200 episodes of a Boston Blackie radio show were produced, as well as 58 episodes of a television series. As recently as 2002, two graphic novels featured the honorable thief.
Jack Boyle began writing after years of hard living. Having moved to San Francisco to work as a newspaperman, Boyle became addicted to opium and turned to a life of crime. He died in 1928, just fourteen years after the first Blackie story was published.
