The Woman in White is known to mystery buffs as an early instance—if not the first instance—of the “sensation novel.” It follows drawing instructor Walter Hartright, who has a strange encounter one night with a woman, wearing all white, who has just escaped from an insane asylum. Later, Walter falls madly in love with an orphan student, one who bears an astonishing resemblance to the woman in white. She marries a baronet who will stop at nothing to gain control of her inheritance, and when she realizes her mistake, it might already be too late to turn back. It’s up to Walter and the girl’s devoted half-sister to save her from a fate worse than death.
Wilkie Collins (1824-1889) was an English playwright and novelist. He was a close friend and frequent collaborator of Charles Dickens’s, and is best known as the author of The Moonstone and The Woman in White, widely recognized as the forerunners of modern suspense. He authored fifteen novels and numerous short stories.
