The Incredible Schlock Homes and The Memoirs of Schlock Homes contain some of the most memorable Sherlock Holmes parodies. The stories follow Detective Schlock Homes and his partner, Dr. Watney, as they investigate crimes from their apartment on Bagel Street. Fish has crafted pitch-perfect renditions of Doyle’s work, except for one thing: Homes and Watney hardly ever discover the results they anticipate, and instead find themselves stumbling into (and out of) hilarious quandaries.
Just as often, though, these stories transcend the limitations of parody, and stand alone as Fish’s own comic masterpieces. Perhaps this is why they’ve remained so popular, decades after their initial publication.
Robert L. Fish became an author after a successful career as a civil engineer and a nine-year stint living and working in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. His first short story was published in Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine, and his first novel, The Fugitive, won the Edgar award for first novel.
