Fantômas is one of the most popular characters in French crime fiction, and has served as the basis for numerous film, television, and comic book adaptations. The villain is a brilliant and sociopathic murderer, a master of disguise who kills with bizarre yet sadistic techniques.
Together, Marcel Allain and Pierre Souvestre authored thirty-two Fantômas novels before Souvestre’s death. After Souvestre’s death, Allain went on to write eleven more titles featuring the character. They began writing the series at the request of a publisher who wanted to create a new monthly pulp magazine.
