Anna Katherine Green was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1846 and died in 1935. Her first novel, The Leavenworth Case, was an instant hit, and sparked debate in the Pennsylvania Senate over whether the book could “really have been written by a woman. Though the mystery genre was at that time dominated by male writers, Green’s novels were very well-received, and went on to influence people like Agatha Christie and Arthur Conan Doyle. Before her death at age 88, Green wrote over twenty-five full-length books and numerous short story collections.
