Louis Joseph Vance (1879-1933) is best remembered for creating the Lone Wolf, one of the most iconic characters in American popular culture. The gentleman jewel thief-turned-private eye set a trend for generations of mystery novels that followed and, between 1919 and 1949, inspired two dozen films.
