A. E. W. Mason (1865-1948) is best remembered for the novel The Four Feathers and his Inspector Hanaud series, but many of his over twenty novels went on to become bestsellers in England. The Witness for the Defense was made into a silent film in 1919 directed by George Fitzmaurice and At the Villa Rose was adapted three times for film.
