They all chronicle the exploits of cunning gentleman thief, a man led by virtue to burgle only villains, who works for good on the wrong side of the law.
Lupin first appeared in 1905, and Leblanc went on to write twenty-two novels featuring the beloved character. The series has also inspired numerous spinoffs and pastiches authored by other writers, not unlike Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes series.
Maurice Leblanc (1864-1941) was a French novelist and writer of short stories. A law school dropout, his novels are heavily influenced by the likes of Gustav Flaubert and Guy de Maupassant. Though his aspirations were more literary, the surprise success of Lupin led him to work primarily in crime fiction, where he stories with language as robust as their action.
